Getting all of the boring things out of the way- I’m Hallie, I swim and run. I like Harry Potter, volunteering, friends, democrats and boys and I spend my free time on Netflix(???).  None of that is interesting so I’m going to talk about something that we all love, food. As I spend most of my time playing sports, I need food and I want it to be healthy because I can really tell the difference in my performance when I’m not eating healthy. My favorite food by far is apples. I could talk about apples for years but I realize that I’m the only one who cares about apples so I will stop. Even though apples hold a special place in my heart I won’t discriminate against other fruits either and I a few at every meal. As fruits and vegetables go hand in hand I will talk about them next, vegetables aren’t my favorite thing but you need them to stay healthy. I get most of my vegetables from a CSA(Community Supported Agriculture) at my church that I volunteer at every weekend. This program at our church provides organic produce from local farmers who are trying to decrease their dependence on growing tobacco and distributes it to members of the community with a focus on low income families who could otherwise not afford these foods. I love this organization because it combines my two favorite things, volunteering and food. As hard as I try to be healthy, I do have a sweet tooth that can’t be tamed. This leads to eating a ridiculous amount of chocolate things. My newest addiction is putting fun things in brownies. I know where your mind just went to but I’m talking about perfectly legal things like Reecees Cups, all kinds of candy bars, pudding, and lots of nutella. So, if you ever want me to bring you some food, just hit me up.

My favorite song right now, and plot twist- it's not about food.

this is just great.
Im obsessed with Harry Potter(I've read the entire series 28 times) and I was able to visit the studios of Harry Potter in London this summer.

Gatsby

Dear diary,

It has been an experience moving up here to be a bondsman. But, I have met even more interesting people. Some of the people that I have spend much time with are Daisy, her husband Tom and the most interesting man my neighbor Jay Gatsby. Daisy is a sweet young girl. But, I feel
Bad for her, she is married to a man and I question if she really loves him. I think she is still in love with Gatsby because apparently they were in love when they were younger. Her husband Tom cheats on her with a large, nice woman names
Myrtle. I feel bad for Daisy because she has had to deal with Toms cheating for a long time. That's even the reason they had to leave Chicago. Tom also hit Myrtle which makes me very annoyed with him because I think he was out of line doing that. I wonder if he does the same with Daisy. Finally the most interesting man I have met is Jay Gatsby. He lives in a huge mansion and host extravagant parties a of the time. I am wondering if he lives outside his means because he has many Rolls Royces and a great pool. He also always has drinks at his parties. Overall I think he is a good man most of the time.

BP Adds

Ad #1
propaganda: card stacking- the CEO of BP only talks about the things that his company is doing right in cleaning up the oil spill and avoids talking about the harsh environmental effect that his company has caused.
fallacy: observational selection- similarly to card staking the commercial only focuses on the positive thing BP is doing.

Add #2
propaganda: testimonial- In the commercial they use a big name person(Emeril Lagasse) to talk about how good of a job BP is doing in cleaning up the oil spill. This is a testimonial because Emeril Lagasse is a chef and is not an expert on the oil spill or how these events effect the environment.
fallacy: confirmation bias- Emeril Lagasse mostly talks about the positive things that are being done to clean up the oil spill and only talks about the negative aspect once.

Add #3
propaganda: transfer- BP uses the positive image of an Olympic athlete in conjunction with their name so the positive image and national pride associated with the Olympic athlete is transferred to BP.
fallacy: argumentum ad populum- the appeal and pride of a national symbol is being related to BP

Add #4
propaganda: plain folks- In the add many everyday people are seen enjoying the gulf fishing, eating and having fun. So, people think if these everyday people are having fun then I would have fun too.
fallacy: excluded middle- The commercial says that BP added 3,000 jobs in the last year but they don't mention that a majority of those jobs are due to the oil spill.

Add #5
propaganda: glittering generalities- The commercial use words like best, great, and better that have no real meaning but make the add sound good.
fallacy: bandwagon- The advertisement says things like "its everyones Americas get away" and uses other inclusive phrases like that. This is bandwagon because it is saying since everyone else does something you should do it too.

Chain Gang

The message or theme of the sing Chain Gang is that you might be sad but outsiders think you are happy. We know this because the chain gangs say they are sad but listening to them it makes it seem like they are happy. This fits into the time period because the idea of the "perfect family" is that everything is happy but when you look closer you realize not everyone is happy.

Commercial

Country Corn Flakes- Ethos because they showed the general mill sign and its a reliable company. Half truth when they say it never wilts because eventually it will wilt but it won't at the beginning.
Alki-seltzer- Logos because it list everything that is good about it and why you should buy it. Half truths because it says it calms all stomachs when if your stomach is bleeding it won't calm that.
Delk- Logos because it explains the 6 part system and makes you want to buy it.

Where have you gone charming billy

The dark scary setting and the fearful and then happy mood help the reader to sympathize with the narrator. The setting is a dark scary area makes the reader feel scared an therefore sympathetic with the narrator. The frightful mood also makes the reader sympathetic with the soldier because they can see how he is scared. Then when the author talks about happy times with his dad he uses a happy mood. This makes the reader sympathize with the narrator because the reader see how happy he was before and how sad he is now.

America

He thinks that's America is divided because he talks about happiness and then sadness. But he thinks that that there is much good in America. He shows that we are divided by saying you and me not us which is more inclusive. He also wants Americans to choose the nice side by saying to "walk in the freedom highway".
